Lines Across

Lets Make a Mess

Crayon Flash Cards

June 18, 2011 by Rachel 6 Comments

Since Benjamin is really starting to learn his colors and numbers right now, I wanted to make him some flash cards that he could play with. So I got the idea to make 1-10 multicolored crayon flash cards.

Here is what I used:

Construction Paper
Sharpie
Scanner/Copier
Scissors
Tape
Glue
Crayons
Cardboard
Empty tissue box

First I sketched out a crayon on a piece of white paper, then I traced over it with a sharpie. I like to keep it looking childlike so I’m not picky on straight lines and all. However I did learn later on that it helps to keep the shape very symmetrical.

I then scanned/copied 2 crayons onto different colors of construction paper.

Then I cut out all of the crayons (I cut outside of the black lines) and colored in the tops and bottoms of the crayons with actual crayons.
You could stop at this point and go in a different direction with this project. You could make 26 different crayons, put one letter on each (A, B, C, D…) and then hang them in a row across a room. You could also put one letter on each and spell out your child’s name (I love baby name arts and crafts).

You then trace and cut out 10 pieces of cardboard. I then used Elmer’s glue (not too much) to glue the construction paper to the pieces of cardboard.

You could use these hands-on flash cards for different things: first words, color names, letters, or numbers.

I then wrote out the numbers 1 – 10 on these cards.

Before I was able to completely finish gluing the construction paper onto both sides of the crayons, Benjamin woke up and got his hands on them… He has been playing with them and laughing for the past hour.

He loves to stack them. He loves to count them and say what number is on them and what color each crayon is.

I also took an empty tissue box to make a crayon box. We may decorate it together later. I just cut one end off and taped yellow construction paper around the outside. The box was also a big hit with Benjamin. He didn’t want to let go of it long enough for me to take a picture, haha.

On the back of the crayons you could also add a number of things. We cut out pictures from magazines in each of the different colors and glued them on. For the white one we found a white van.

(I also found that when gluing things from a magazine a glue stick works much better than regular liquid Elmer’s glue)

    Brilliant!!!

Love that you have color recognition and number recognition all in one!

The little white car example shown makes them even more interesting to the wee-wonders!

Can't wait to see the 'box' you make together for storing!
