Easy Painting of quotes or song lyrics - Let It Be

I made these paintings for my brother a few years ago. You could get a large canvas and put a quote or part of a song on it, but I liked to split them up into three different canvases. Since we both LOVE the Beatles, I chose a lyric from the song "Let It Be".

I bought ABC stencils from Michael's for most of the letters. In order to make the inverted letters, I cut a square out of thick paper and then put the punched out letter inside of it and painted around it.

Since this was for a teenage boy's room, I wanted to keep it simple and not girly. I chose 2 primary colors for the background and mixed up a lot of each (so that the colors would be very consistent throughout all 3 paintings). I then painted the backgrounds of 2 of the canvases black, and 1 gray. I then added the opposite color as a border around the sides and splattered the opposite color all over the canvas.

Then I lightly marked with pencil about where each letter would go. I chose the quote "There's still a light that shines on me; shine on until tomorrow, let it be". To keep it from being too busy, I chose to only use about 5 or 6 different colors for the letters. Again I would mix up enough of each color at the beginning to last through all 3 paintings.

These paintings are meant to be hung on the wall on top of each other like they are arranged in this picture.

I plan on making something like this to hang in Benjamin and Lyla's rooms.

  1. Love this! I have a few canvases waiting to do something for my boys wall - my first attempt was a bust and I threw it away. I'll have to think about something like this instead. Following you from MOnday Mingle blog hop. I hope you have a great evening!
