Lets Make a Mess

Fabric Bows

August 9, 2011 by Rachel 23 Comments

This weekend I decided to try making some bows out of fabric. I had seen this wonderful tutorial over at See Kate Sew and made a handful myself.

Kate makes them using her sewing machine which seems to be pretty easy. However I do not own a sewing machine and actually have never used one before. So I just hand stitched these pretty quickly.

First cut out a piece of fabric. I used a few of the single sheets of thin cotton fabric used for quilting. You can make any size bow that you want by folding a piece of fabric in half and cutting out a square with rounded edges. Remember to fold the fabric inside out before marking it.

Then with the fabric still inside out, sew around the edges of the rounded square, leaving a hole open. Since I am not great at sewing invisible stitches and the middle is going to be covered with another piece of fabric, I left the hole open in the top middle.

Next, flip the pouch inside out. Sew closed the hole.

Pinch together the fabric in the center of the square.

Wrap a thin piece of fabric around the middle. You can do it tightly or loosely to get different looking bows.

Sew straight across the back of the strip of fabric. Make sure that it is very secure. Cut off any pieces of fabric that are sticking out.

At this point there are so many different uses for these bows. You can glue on alligator hair clips. You could also simply use a bobby pin to attach the bow to your hair. You could use them to decorate bags or lamps or outfits. You could also easily attach them to headbands.

I made this black and white bow for Lyla’s hair. She is the cutest little baby bow model.
