Button Sheep Embroidery Hoop Ornament {Christmas Ornament #1)

Over the next couple of weeks I am starting a series of easy homemade Christmas ornaments. I'm really excited to share them with you!

#1 - Button Sheep Embroidery Hoop Ornament

Ever since I saw this button sheep months ago from Fowl Single File, I have wanted to make one of my own. I also love sheep in Christmas decorations (they were a part of the nativity scene after all) and decided that this project would make an adorable ornament.

What you need:

1. 4 inch embroidery hoop (paint optional)
2. Green and black felt
3. White buttons
4. A few different colors of embroidery floss
5. Hot glue gun and scissors

What you do:

1. Fit a piece of green felt in a 4 inch embroidery hoop. (Looking back I wish I had used a lighter shade of green so that the black would stand out more).

2. Using a very small dab of hot glue, I attached the white buttons to the felt one at a time. Make sure you don't get any glue in the button holes or it will be difficult to sew though later.

3. When you are happy with your fluffy sheep body, cut out a piece of black felt in the shape of a head and glue it next to the body.

4. Now using black embroidery floss (double threaded), sew an outline around the body of the sheep using a simple back-stitch. Also sew on two little sheep legs. Then sew around the sheep head with white thread. Sew on the buttons with a variety of your favorite colors.

5. To turn this hoop into a finished ornament, trim the edges of extra felt so that there is a little less than an inch sticking out. Then cut triangles out all around and glue each flap to the inside of the wooden hoop. I tried to not glue directly to the back of the felt. Now glue a felt circle to the inside of the hoop. Attach a ribbon to the top, hang, and enjoy.

  1. Just so cute! Will you link up to my Handmade on Humpday link party over at ? Thank you!

  2. I just "pinned" this to my button board. So cute!

Thank you for your comments - they make my day!
