Handmade Ornament #16

Monogram Glitter Ornament Tutorial from Rae Gun Ramblings

Hello I’m Marissa from Rae Gun Ramblings where I blog about all thing crafty, delicious, and bookish. I spend most of my days sewing for my Etsy shop where I sell handmade baby clothes and fan stuff for Young Adult readers. I’m so excited to be here a part of this handmade ornament series. I’m a little obsessed with making ornaments so if you visit my blog you’re sure to find lots of tutorials and inspiration to make your own. Today I’m sharing a simple monogram glitter ornament tutorial.

One thing that I love about making your own ornaments is the ability to totally customize to whatever tastes or trend you are feeling at the moment. The technique I used can be adapted to work with any image as long as you have a stamp. So you don’t have to be limited to monograms although I think they are a fun trend.

To make your own you will need the following:
  • 2×3 Wood Pieces (I found these at the craft store in small packages)
  • Paint
  • Glitter
  • Mod Podge
  • Rubber Stamp
  • Ribbon

Start by drilling a hole in your wood piece. If you’re not comfortable using a drill feel free to just glue your ribbon on at the end to allow it to hang. Then paint your wood piece making sure to cover the edges. After the paint dries cover with a single coat of Mod Podge and allow to dry.

Paint a thin even layer of Mod Podge onto a scrap surface and place your stamp on it like it is an ink pad and then stamp your wood piece with the Mod Podge. If you don’t like how it looks you can quickly rinse it off and try again. Then sprinkle generously with gold. Allow to set for at least an hour. Tap off the excess glitter and if necessary you might want to take a dry brush to clear the rest of the glitter. String a ribbon through the hole tie a knot then form a loop and tie a bow to allow it to hang. Hang on your tree or give it as as gift.
