Handmade Pineapple Baby Costume and 88 DIY Costumes

September 26, 2014 by Rachel 7 Comments

I really LOVE simple DIY baby costumes (like this football onesie I shared a couple of years ago). Today, I’m sharing a super cute handmade no-sew pineapple costume for a baby made from a onesie. What’s so cute about both the football and pineapple onesies is that babies are already sort of shaped like pineapples and footballs.

What’s even better is that I’ve teamed up with a TON of other amazing creative bloggers to share 88+ handmade costume ideas and tutorials. Thanks so much Jamie Dorobek for organizing! Also be sure to check out her her handmade Halloween costume site, Really Awesome Costumes for more inspiration and tutorials. (SCROLL DOWN TO CHECK OUT THE OTHER COSTUMES)

There are so many fun ways you could create a simple pineapple onesie costume. For some reason I couldn’t find a simple yellow onesie, so I ordered these sleeveless white onesies on Amazon and dyed one sunshine yellow. (I love these little onesies. Sometimes onesies seem to run really small, but these are true to size.)

What you need:
1. Yellow Onesie (OR Sleeveless Onesies
and Yellow Dye
)
2. White felt (black or brown would also be cute)
3. Scissors and/or a Large Paper Trimmer

4. Glue gun and/or Liquid Stitch

5. Elastic
6. Green felt
7. Thin cardboard (cereal box)

How to make the headband:

1. First cut a pieces of thin cardboard (I used a cereal box) in the shape that you want.

2. Trace the shapes of the leaves you will need to cover the cardboard onto pieces of green felt. Attach the pieces one at a time with a glue gun.

3. Flip over the cardboard, and lay the elastic along the back. Cut a piece of felt wider than the elastic and glue it to the cardboard around the elastic. Then stitch together the elastic ends and you’re done!

How to make the onesie:

1. Prepare your onesie. (You could cut the sleeves off of a regular yellow onesie, or dye a sleeveless one like I did. This was actually my first time dying fabric, and it worked perfectly and was really easy.)

2. Cut long strips of white felt that are even in width. I used my big paper cutter. Also cut little squares. Lay them out over your onesie to get a sense of where you want them to go.

3. You could use liquid stitch or a hot glue gun to secure the felt pieces. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PARCHMENT PAPER IN BETWEEN THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE ONESIE! Start gluing, letting the pieces stick out the edges.

4. Carefully cut the edges of the felt along the sides of the onesie. Then go back and glue the edges to make sure they are secure.
