Porcupine Pin Cushion (Craft Stash Bash #2 – Nokoikonomia)

June 5, 2012 by Rachel 6 Comments

Welcome Jill from Nokoikonomia!

Hello! My name’s Jill and I blog over at Nokoikonomia about what I call the art of household management. Basically, everything from meal planning to home decor to budgets to DIY and crafts! I’m excited to be sharing a craft here today.

I’m proud to say that this project was originally a Pinterest find; it’s the 1 out of 1000 things I’ve pinned that I’ve actually completed. The one I originally pinned was from prudentbaby.com, so as far as I know that’s the source!

Pin-Cupine Ingredients:
felt, any color
yarn, any color
needle
stuffing material
pebbles/beans
pins

I started with the template from Prudent Baby which you can find here. After cutting out the pattern, I pinned it to my felt and just cut around the pattern. Then i just started sewing. I started by sewing the two sides of the porcupine together.

When I got to the tail, I turned down one leg and started sewing the top of my pin-cupine onto the bottom. The bottom wasn’t matching up with the top anymore, so I just trimmed the bottom piece of felt  down as I went. I got to this point and then stuck it in a drawer for a few weeks while I graduted from law school and packed up our house to move from Minnesota to Texas.

Then I came back with some better light, a photo backdrop (sheet of paper) and renewed enthusiasm. I sewed all the way around my little pin-cupine friend leaving just a hole at the back for stuffing. Then I realized I had no stuffing because everything is packed. So I found an old robe that was in a sack waiting to go to Goodwill by the door.

I cut the robe into strips and used that as stuffing. It worked really well because it was so much firmer than cotton so the pins can jab into it well. After I had it almost stuffed, I tucked a few small round pebbles into the bottom, to provide some ballast for the bottom of the pin-cupine.
Then I sewed up the last edge and starting sticking pins in! Voila, a porcupine pincushion, or as I like to say, a pin-cupine!

It was also appreciated by my 9 month old daughter, Jaye (without the pins, of course!). If you enjoyed this project, check out my blog or follow Nokoikonomia on Facebook.
