Babies Can Drink From Straws

September 24, 2011 by Rachel 6 Comments

We have been having a lot of trouble lately getting my 9 month old daughter Lyla to take a bottle. She also doesn’t like sippy cups.

Our doctor suggested giving her a straw. I thought she was crazy. What 9 month old drinks from a straw?

Well it worked. Maybe it isn’t that weird, but it seems so unusual to me. She also really wants to put the straw in and out of the bottle all by herself. Usually she is pretty good at it, but sometimes it gets messy. Lyla acts so much older than her age in many ways. She says a lot of words: go go go, up, mama, dada, up mama, cracker, cat, yumyumyum, more, all gone, uh oh… I think it is partially because she has her big brother around to listen to and imitate.

As usual I sound like an idiot on this video. Maybe I shouldn’t talk in the future when I’m taking videos. Also I couldn’t get Lyla to talk in this video, but I’m hoping to capture her talking soon.

At first Lyla had trouble drinking from a straw (so did Benjamin when we first started giving him straws as a toddler). The best trick I found was to start with juice boxes (you can get watered down juice boxes, or open them from the side and water them down yourself). This way you can squeeze the box so that your baby/toddler starts to understand what comes out of the straw. We also use extra thin bendy straws.

In other news, I have been having a lot of fun lately playing around with photo editing.

That's good to know! My 7 month old doesn't like bottles and we give her a sippy cup, but she chews on it more than drinks and doesn't really know to lift it to get more liquid out. haha, but I think she would like straws! I'll have to try that soon.

For reals? My 8 mo. old likes to situp with her bottle and does the same with a sippy cup. Just sucking on air. She loves drinking out of the bottom of my straw, so hmmm, perhaps this is worth a shot. Crazy! Thanks for sharing, popping over from Tip Junkie.
