Lines Across

Lets Make a Mess

Wooden Crayon Peg Board

August 17, 2011 by Rachel 21 Comments

I was inspired to make this peg board for Benjamin based on three things.

1. This beautiful colored pencil holder from Strawberry Chic. I love the rustic look of this one.

2. A couple months ago we went out to eat and Benjamin got his hands on one of these peg boards. He loved it so much and just kept playing with it. I thought it would be fun to make him his own.

3. I was looking for any excuse to bring out the power drill.

First I sketched out where I wanted the crayons to go. I thought about making a grid but ended out making a spiral. I drilled holes into a wooden plaque I bought at Michael’s (with a 3/8 inch spade drill bit). Then I sanded the board and smoothed it out. After painting the board with a few coats of white and turquoise paints, I glued a piece of felt to the bottom of the board.

I love this project so much because Benjamin loved it soooo much. His eyes lit up and he started laughing when he saw it. He immediately knew what to do. He took the crayons out one by one, and then one at a time he started putting them back in the holes. He learned very quickly to put the points facing up. This is such a great exercise for fine motor skills and a fun way to teach colors and practice counting.

Benjamin was so excited that he said (and signed thank you), “Thank you Mommy crayons.”

When he had finished putting all of the crayons back, he wanted to show it to everyone and he really wanted me to take his picture with it. He smiled proudly for the picture.

Awesome! Benjamin seems to love it, too. I can see it being a good tool for learning colors, too.

Very cute! I've done a similar project to this, but for markers. Instead you set the lids in plaster of paris so they are all stuck in a block. Then kids are more likely to put the lids back on the markers. Also, because the lids are stuck to a hard surface it's easier for little kids to *click* the markers!! [Just a tip from my preschool teaching years lol]

Thanks for visiting my blog the other day, I joined your linky party & I hope you visit me again sometime 🙂

Thanks for linking up at Mel Dreams Often. I'm a new follower. I love this idea, thanks for posting! My girls constantly put all their crayons and pencils in a bag and get them all mixed up. Then, they have to dump the bag onto the carpet to find any color. Love this!

Cool… no more rolling crayons around the house. The most important part is that Benjamin liked it. Great job.

Thanks for linking up at Tea Time Thursdays @ Kreative Korner and adding to the fun. The party for this week is going on… hope to see you there again 🙂

I'm a new follower and love this idea. It's getting pinned to my board. 🙂 I am thinking of doing a version of this only attached to a tray for when my kids want to color in the car on long road trips. 🙂 Have a great week!
