Embroidery Thread Wrapped Picture Frame

October 5, 2011 by Rachel 20 Comments

I love how beautiful embroidery thread looks, and I enjoy picking out new colors and seeing how they look together. I also love buttons and I have been wanting to do a project where each button represented a different member of our family.

First, I wrapped the mat that came with an Ikea frame in different colors of embroidery thread. You could also use a cut out a piece of cardboard.

I chose 5 colors that I wanted to use and ended out using each of them 3 times. You could also use 2 or 3 colors and make even stripes around the edge of the frame.

To wrap the mat in thread:

1. Flip the mat over. Tie the end of a piece of thread around the mat so that the knot is only visible in the back.

2. Cut off a piece of thread and wrap until it runs out (or you decide to change colors). Tie another knot. Trim it so that it is only visible from the back.

3. Keep changing colors and wrapping. A couple times I let the color continue around the corner. I left the corners empty, but you could add buttons, especially if you are using this as a stand alone frame.

Use the wrapped mat or cardboard as a frame. This adorable little baby is my niece, Jaye.

I picked out 4 buttons. One to represent each member of our family in each of our favorite colors. (Lyla doesn’t have a favorite color yet, but I thought pink was fitting for a baby girl). It would be fun to let older kids pick out their own buttons.

I felt like there was already enough thread in this project. So to keep it simple, I printed the words better together, and then glued on the buttons. The boy buttons are facing horizontally and the girl buttons are facing vertically.

Your projects are great each and every week! I love embroidery thread too! I don't know how to do actual embroidery, but I do like to embellish with it. I used it on this weeks project as a matter of fact.
