Lines Across

Lets Make a Mess

Yarn + Wire Hanger = Bird

August 17, 2011 by Rachel 5 Comments

I recently came across this beautiful LOVE on Pinterest that was made using wire (or a wire hanger) and some thick yarn. I thought it would be fun to take this same idea and make a bird for Lyla’s nursery.

See the full project and tutorial @ Family Chic

This entire project took about 10 minutes and I only used things that I already had around the house: a wire hanger, and some thick yarn.

First, bend a wire hanger into the shape you want. I like how this turned out but it was very difficult working with the wire hanger and I would definitely recommend buying some reinforced clothesline wire from the hardware store.

You could also use ribbon, or a combination of yarns for a fun look.

Tie a knot at one end and start wrapping. I was able to do the entire thing with one strand of yarn, but you may want to cut the yarn at some point and start with a new piece.

When you reach places where the wires cross, wrap the yarn around both pieces to give the whole piece stability. In some places I wrapped the yarn a little thicker for some variety.

I tied a piece of thread around the wing and hung it from the ceiling. It looks very cute this way.

I also hung it against the wall. I think that this is where it looks best at my house.

I love the result (it actually turned out better in person than in the photographs) but I especially love this idea. I  might have to make a few more birds, or maybe spell out Lyla. (Of course this time probably not with a hanger).
