Watercolor Popsicle Garland

August 10, 2015 by Rachel 1 Comment

Welcome the talented Natasha of Violet Tinder Studios who is here today to share her original artwork with you all – these gorgeous hand painted watercolor popsicle garland. She’s also sharing a fun tutorial on how to turn them into a festive garland. You can shop Natasha’s artwork here (how beautiful are these geodes?) or follow along with her on Instagram.
What You’ll Need:
– White cardstock
– Colored twine {approx. 3 feet, more if you like them spaced further apart}
– A glue stick
– Scissors
– Washi tape

1) Start by printing out the popsicle cut-outs onto thick card-stock paper. Make sure you have an extra blank sheet for each popsicle you use… they’ll be used to line each popsicle when it’s time to attach them.
2) Once you’ve printed your popsicles, start cutting them out, one sheet at a time. You’ll want to place a blank sheet behind each one as you cut, so that each popsicle has a matching “back sheet” when you’ve finished cutting.
3) Take your twine and lay it out on a flat surface. You’ll want to measure how much extra twine you want hanging on the ends, so you don’t accidentally use it! Then, start by placing the blank “back sheet” of your first popsicle on the twine, where you want the garland to begin. Once you’re happy with the location, mark the twine with a dab of glue.
4) Then, take that same back sheet, and cover the top side with the glue stick. When it’s fully covered with a thin, even layer of glue, place it UNDER the string, right where you marked the twine with glue. You’ll also want to place the twine approximately an inch or two from the top of the popsicle. If it’s any lower, they won’t hang as well once the garland is up. I spaced each popsicle 6 inches apart, but you can put them closer together or further apart. Just make sure that the spaces between the popsicles are all the same size.
5) Take the top of the popsicle (the colorful side!), and cover the backside with a thin, even layer of glue. Then, place that directly on top of the bottom layer, aka the “back sheet”. This should cover the string, so the popsicle looks suspended right on top of it!
6) Continue steps 3-5 with the remaining popsicles, until you’ve used them all. Set the garland aside to dry, making sure none of the popsicles are touching each other, so they don’t get stuck. They should be thoroughly dry in about 20 minutes… and then you’re ready to hang the garland up and PARTY!!!!
