Secret Message Lunch Notes

October 5, 2015 by Rachel 14 Comments

Maybe it’s because I grew up in Florida with a grapefruit tree in my backyard, but I’m a snob when it comes to juice. I absolutely love orange juice and grapefruit juice, but I want it to be fresh. Natalie’s OJ is seriously the BEST and it’s made with 100% Florida oranges. So of course I was thrilled to partner with Natalie’s to bring you these fun back to school notes.

These secret message lunch notes are so much fun! Basically, you use white crayons to write invisible messages. Then your kids use markers to make the words magically appear. My kids seriously love them. They even like to write me secret message notes, which are the sweetest.

What you need:

  1. Cardstock (thick white paper works so much better for some reason)
  2. Scissors
  3. White Crayon (NOT washable)
  4. Markers (watercolors also work well but don’t fit in a lunch box)

What you do:

  1. Cut out small pieces of white cardstock for notes. My kids wanted to color the whole piece of paper so I tried to keep them pretty small.
  2. Use your white crayon to write a message. I would recommend simple and short messages. Make sure you’re pressing down pretty well and you can even draw over the same lines a few times.
  3. Dust off any excess bits of crayon that might be sitting on the paper.
  4. Let your kid color across the whole piece of paper with a marker. It works much better to use the thick flat side of the marker.

A few tips: This really does work very well and is a lot of fun. After a little while, the white crayon seems to build up on the markers. You can wipe it off easily though.

I’ve started packing secret messages (and a marker) in my kids’ lunchboxes. One fun idea is to write with pen on one side of the paper something like, “After school today we’re going to…” and then write the secret answer on the other side. It’s a great way to fit more words onto a small card.

I’ve also started packing some delicious Natalie’s juices in their lunchboxes as well. You can check out their website to find a place that sells Natalie’s near you. If you can’t find the smaller containers, you could always just pour some juice into a thermos.

My kids absolutely love the strawberry lemonades. I completely understand because they are delicious. My far and away favorite though is the orange mango. YUM!

These are the sweetest – and so much fun for the kids to “reveal” the message!

Thanks Sara. They are so much fun. Oh and washable crayons (which are usually a lifesaver) don’t work as well for these messages.
